I did it

I did it… my first Open Water Dive😆

In the morning, theory and afterwards I was joined by three other persons of which two just wanted to refresh their skills and one girl who just wanted to give it a try.

First we practiced in the pool until lunch time. A very strange feeling to be able to breathe under water. I was not sure I would manage to do it as I’ve tried once before in Mexico in a pool, but only for a couple of minutes, and could not breathe. Now it worked immediately. It was not difficult at all. Though I struggled remembering everything that I had to do when descending and ascending, so I still need a lot of practice.

In the afternoon we geared up and headed out for my first Open Water Dive. Once the gear was checked and we gad put it on, we put our butts as far out from the edge of the boat as possible, filled our BCD with air, left hand on our weight belt, right hand holding on to our regulator and mask and then leaned backwards. With all the weight from our tubes and gear we easily fell backwards into the water. In my head this looked very professional. What later did not look very professional was me trying to get back into the boat. You know, your in your wet suit, you have your fins on and the only thing you have to do is push up with your fins and graciously push yourself up to the boat. Just let me say, that did not happen and I’m afraid I looked more like a walrus than a sexy blond diver and the laughter from everyone else in the both confirmed the walrus theory.

Since this was my and Sara’s first dive we had to go slower down than the others. I did well, I must say, but Sara was struggling and panicking and it took about 15 minutes before she came down under the surface which meant I had to wait at about 2-3 meters below surface before we could start descending further. Probably good for me though because it gave me time to adapt to this new world, which by the way, was awesome.

We did a 40 minute dive at maximum 12 meters. I didn’t think I wanted to go that far below and that 5 meters would be enough, but once there it did not feel that bad and I did so much better than I expected that I actually feel very proud of myself afterwards.

What I struggled with again was when ascending. I have problem regulating my boyance levels so still need much more practice there. Tomorrow I will do my second dive and we’ll play around with different weights to see if that makes it easier for me.

Very much look forward to another dive in the deep blue and I hope it will go as well as today.
